Welcome back to my blog! If you’re new here, I’m Sarah Sperber, a real estate agent in the Northern Nevada housing market. I share insights about the market, lifestyle, and everything related to buying and selling real estate. Today, I’ll focus on relocating from Oregon to Nevada, highlighting the similarities, differences, and what you need to know.
According to the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, many of our new residents come from:
1. California
2. Florida
3. Texas
4. Oregon
Today, we’ll dive into what makes moving from Oregon to Nevada unique.
Reno, situated in the high desert, offers a mix of very hot summers and cold nights. It’s not uncommon to experience sun and snow on the same day. In contrast, Oregon, particularly the Pacific Northwest, is known for its wet and gloomy weather. While Oregon’s lush greenery is beautiful, Reno’s dry climate and proximity to Lake Tahoe provide ample outdoor recreational opportunities.

While Oregon offers diverse landscapes including coastlines and lush forests, Reno is surrounded by the Sierra Nevadas and high desert terrain. For outdoor enthusiasts, both states have much to offer. Reno provides excellent opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and mountain climbing, with Lake Tahoe just a short drive away.
Nevada tends to be more centrist, with urban areas like Reno leaning liberal and rural areas more conservative. Oregon, particularly cities like Portland and Eugene, is known for its liberal stance. This shift might be significant depending on your political views.
Reno boasts a vibrant cultural scene with influences from Burning Man, a plethora of artistic installations, and a variety of eclectic food options. While it may not yet rival Portland’s established scene, Reno offers a unique and evolving cultural landscape.

Cost of living comparisons can be tricky due to the variations within each state. Generally, living in Reno is comparable to living in Portland when it comes to housing, groceries, and gas. However, specific costs can vary widely depending on the exact location.
