7 Things You Should Really Know Before Moving to Reno Nevada

(...From a Local Who’s Been Here for 15+ Years)

Hey there! I’m Sarah Schultz, a REALTOR® here in Northern Nevada serving Reno, Sparks, Carson City, and the surrounding areas. If you’re thinking about moving to Reno Nevada—or you’ve recently relocated—you might be wondering what day-to-day life is really like here.

First things first: I love Reno. I chose to move here more than 15 years ago, and I’ve never looked back. But like every city, Reno has its quirks. This post isn’t meant to scare you off, but to give you a realistic look at what it’s like to live in the Biggest Little City.

So, let’s talk about the not-so-glamorous things you should know before calling Reno home.

1.
The Wind Is Next-Level

Let’s start with something you’ll notice right away: the wind. It has absolutely no chill.

We’re talking full-on fence-toppling, tree-felling, semi-truck-flipping wind. I’ve had to replace parts of my fence, and neighbors have had trees fall into their yards. If you’re purchasing a home in Reno, it’s worth budgeting for stronger fencing, secured patio furniture, and maybe even reinforced shingles.

Oh, and if you’re heading south toward Carson City on 395—especially near Washoe Lake—don’t be surprised to see trailers or semis tipped over during windstorms. It’s wild.

2.
Road Construction Is Eternal

As someone in real estate who drives all over Northern Nevada, I can confidently say: road construction is a permanent fixture here.

Those orange cones feel like our unofficial city mascot. Whether you’re driving through Midtown, heading to Spanish Springs, or just trying to get to Trader Joe’s, chances are you’ll hit roadwork.

Give this a thought before moving to Reno Nevada. It’s frustrating, sure, but it’s also a reflection of how quickly the city is growing. The city is investing in its infrastructure—maybe a little behind schedule—but still, it’s a good sign.

3.
Reno’s Real Estate Market Might Surprise You

If you’re relocating from California, you might expect Reno to be a lower-cost alternative. And while we are less expensive than the Bay Area or SoCal, we’re no longer “cheap.”

The median sales price for a single-family home in Washoe County hovers around $600,000. That’s on par with much larger cities like Denver or Sacramento. Housing demand here has grown rapidly thanks to Reno’s desirable lifestyle, strong job market, and proximity to Lake Tahoe.

That said, if you’re able to purchase a home in Reno, you’re entering a strong market with great long-term equity potential.

4.
The Layout Is...Interesting

Reno’s city layout makes no sense if you’re used to cities with a grid system.

Streets change names, neighborhoods are oddly placed, and what looks like a straight road may curve into something totally unexpected. Why does Kietzke turn into different streets every few blocks? No one knows.

But give it time—you’ll develop a sense of direction. Once you can navigate without GPS, you’re officially a local.

5.
Restaurant Selection Is Hit or Miss

We have some incredible locally owned restaurants here—don’t get me wrong. Midtown, in particular, has some gems. But if you’re coming from a major metro area where you could get sushi, Ethiopian, and a cronut at 3 a.m., you may feel a little limited.

We’re growing! And the boutique, mom-and-pop dining scene is full of charm. But 24-hour options are few, and some cuisines are harder to find.

6.
The Weather Is Wild (Literally)

Reno’s weather changes faster than you can refresh your Zillow feed. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s snowing—and then sunny again.

Locals know to dress in layers and always have backup clothing in the car. My go-to tip? Keep a sweatshirt and swimsuit in the car year-round. That’s just how we live here. It keeps things interesting, but it does take getting used to.

Fun fact: They say, “If you don’t like the weather in Reno, just wait 15 minutes.”

7.
Wildfire Smoke Is a Real Concern

Nevada is the driest state in the country—and with dry summers come wildfires.

Reno is especially affected during “fire season,” typically in late summer and early fall. Some years are mild, with just a few hazy days. Other years, smoke can linger for weeks, making it hard to breathe or spend time outdoors.

If you or your family have asthma or respiratory conditions, this is something to seriously consider. It also impacts homeowner’s insurance in some areas, so factor that into your budget if you’re purchasing a home.

So, Should You Still Move to Reno?

Absolutely—if it feels right for you.

Every city has its pros and cons. Reno’s quirks (like the wind and construction) are balanced by its charm, community, access to Lake Tahoe, and a lifestyle that’s hard to beat. I’ve lived here for over 15 years, raised my family here, built my business here—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
